That isn't really a defence for the americans, electing a populist means a significant proportion of the community is dumb enough to get sucked in by the populist bullshit. And now they reap the rewards! A tax break for the rich and a bunch of broken promises. I just find it staggering that anyone could have taken him seriously, let alone elect the narcissistic piece of shit

The basis of the American government was just fine and actually worked back when it was first put into use. There haven't been any big enough attempts to really change the government that's currently in use until recently in the last 30 years, but because the government is full of greedy, powerful assholes of politics with some charisma, they refuse to allow the government to change because that would mean most of them lose money and power. They don't care what happens to the poor as long as they get paid more and more. Did you actually know that a retired president still gets paid quite a large sum until their death? do you think that's fair to the working class? it isn't. At the moment America isn't very stable and there's a higher than usual chance of a second civil war. That's why as soon as I get the chance, I am leaving this shithole of a country, it's not promising and full of opportunity at all. Disclaimer : I don't really know the whole of politics and I'm not even really in my 20s but it doesn't take a lot of intelligence to see that America is falling. Also, I probably may have got a few things wrong, maybe not, I don't fully 100% know.
    • Jarr2003
      Jarr2003
@Drago America isn't even close to a civil war at the moment. In order for a civil war to realistically happen, a couple entire states would need to attempt to leave the U.S, and there's not nearly enough tension in the U.S to cause that to happen. The Confederacy only happened because of decades of increasing tension, and that was primarily because of slavery. While America certainly isn't at it's best, it's not civil war bad.
    • Drago_meh
      Drago_meh
the civil war was not mostly about slavery. PERIOD. that's just textbook cover up, it was more about how the north was trying to put more laws and taxes on the south, the abolishment of slavery just kinda happened. but slaves were used in factories in the north so both sides were slave users. Also note the disclaimer I put just in case I got more stuff wrong, because everyone gets stuff wrong.
    • Jarr2003
      Jarr2003
@Drago Sources, please? Slavery was very much the cause of the civil war. While there were some states technically in the north (as in, not in the Confederacy) that hadn't banned slavery by the time the civil war began, such as Maryland, a large portion of them had (some had it banned from the day they were officially made states, even). The south, due to it's long reliance on slavery, began to consider slavery part of their way of life, even if only one third of the southern population actually owned slaves. As the abolitionist movement in the north grew, the south began to grow nervous at the risk of a republican or abolitionist gaining power (republicans were liberal back then, surprisingly enough) and attempting to ban slavery. When Lincoln won the election, South Carolina decided to seceed from the U.S fearing he would ban slavery (Lincoln was actually aiming to maintain the union as much as possible, however, so he was planning on either maintaining slavery's legalization, or ban it completely). Technically, the civil war started because the U.S wanted to bring the confederate states back under it's control, but Lincoln decided to officially free the slaves as well.

Granted, if you have good sources saying otherwise, feel free to post them.
    • TheKnifer
      TheKnifer
@Jarr, According to the official documents of secession, only about 5 of the states really fought due to slavery, with an additional 2 that implied it was over slavery. 6 of them fought over state's rights, with an additional 1 implied, North Carolina and Louisiana fought the civil war for No reason, similar to Arkansas, they had a reason but it wasn't anything mainstream. Tennessee refused to say why they joined. However, it was mostly over States rights, slavery was something secondary. (The deep south specifically fought over states rights, while slavery was more implied as a reason rather than a straight yes.) Also, even the Robert E. Lee said that if he could have, he would have freed the slaves. (He fought the war for loyalty to his state.) My source for his quote is from the Smithsonian.
    • Jarr2003
      Jarr2003
@Knifer One could argue that the "states rights" they mentioned were directly because they wanted control of slavery, rather than the government being in control of it. While I can't say I know enough about the civil war to say this with certainty, but I'd assume that due to the south's insistence that slavery was part of their way of life, it's possible that this eventually expanded to the fear of the union removing (what they considered) other parts of their culture. Besides, just because a lot of Confederate states said they weren't seceding because of slavery, doesn't mean that was truthful. The soldiers had their own beliefs as well, and even if many of them fought due to honor and loyalty to their state, there were certainly some that were fighting purely to defend slavery, whether they admitted it or not.

BTW, could you link that quote? I tried searching for it but I couldn't find it.

I was bored, so I drew a circle and put 48 dots on it (you could do it with any number, 48 was just easier to draw)
    For absolutely no reason at all I numbered all these dots: 0, 1, 2, 3... 46, 47, 48 (which is also 0), 49 (which is also 1)...
And then for some bizzarre reason I just felt like connecting the dots in a times 2 fashion: 1 with 2, 3 with 6, 8 with 16, 13 with 26...
Well, would you look at what I just ended up with... I guess you could say that "only 2 truly ♥s math"

  • Today, for the first time in.... like... a couple years I guess, I learned something in MatPat's Game Theory show.
Cephalopods handle RNA differently from us. While I'm not really surprized that two evolutionary-foreign species have different RNA handling, the way it differs here is actually very interesting, making these creatures even more interesting than they already were (and they were top one most biologically interesting species for me already)
I'm... gonna have to ask how RNA editing could affect the squid's evolution, since it's... RNA and not.. you know... DNA mutations... which are.... evolution...
I mean granted RNA editing would mean like, proteins on demand and shit, but not actual mutations and therefore inheritable genes and shit.
I mean what do I know I just learned about this stuff. You're a bad teacher MatPat keepo

  • Election is in two days and, surprisingly, this is like, the closest and most clutch we've had in a very long time. First time we have more than three candidates capable of getting second round (in our current republic at least), since pretty much any of the top five can get to it. Also first time we could see a second round without any representative of the two main parties (republicans and democrats).

To be pretty honest with you I'm having some trouble actually figuring out whom I want to vote for, there are like, three choices I can go with.

      @antichrist
We had 11 candidates, 5 of which were likely to win. Everyone votes, and the two candidates with the better results (the most people voting for them) will have a second round to get a winner. This is a system set in place so that if a good portion of the people wants someone, but all of the rest would absolutely hate to see them as a president, they won't win because it makes more sense in a democratic manner. This is the case for example with Marine Le Pen: she undeniably has one of the biggest following in the country, but everyone else including me would rather insert a garden hose through their eurethra than seeing her as their president, as she is an extremist.
    • Gouchnox
      Gouchnox

    • Gouchnox
      Gouchnox
Bonus of a democratic system: there's an actual likelihood for none of the candidates of the two main parties to get to second round, ad this is just now the case.

Marine Le Pen is Trump if he was French, female, and a politician
François Fillon has... absolutely no chance given the amounts of money he's stolen
Emmanuel Macron is new and hip, young, with his new and hip party and new and hip ideas
Benoit Hamon really wants you to remember that moderate left wing still exists and can be cool
Jean-Luc Mélenchon is just doing bedroom eyes like "hey, it's communism, but with philosophy"
    • Gouchnox
      Gouchnox
Fun fact: Mélenchon, despite being the most left wing with Poutou and Arthaud, is actually the richest of all candidates, with Le Pen behind. That being said given what magical shenanigans Fillon has put us through, he might just be Bill Gates and no one would have known.
    • Gouchnox
      Gouchnox
The sad story is that Poutou is like, our god. He's the absolute best candidate of all, the best guy in history. But he'd be terrible as a president, as himself is putting it.

I mean the guy isn't a candidate. He's just the french people coming to the debates and shitting on the others. He's dressed in a shirt, his campaign tv spots are comedy shorts filmed by a friend, camera on shoulder. He went as candidate because "no one else in the party wanted to so I might as well". This guy is absolutely destroying everyone in the debates, dropping one liners and wrecking all those politicians, because he ain't one. He's part of the working class, he actually is. This guy's two inches away from being like "okay I have to go I'm waking up at 6 tomorrow to build my Toyota at the factory see you on next debate". Everyone loves him.

  • After a bit of testing, turns out even at max speed you can't dodge Hush's laser attack.
The only way would be invincibility (ie Gnawed Leaf, Book of Shadows, Unicorn...) or How to Jump.

This makes it technically the most unfair attack in the game. Hush is still super honest though, remember this game has Ultra Greedier.

  • As you know April Fools day on youtube is basically the day when every creator throws out their jokes, and it's more often than not a very anticipated show. For French people it's even more anticipated due to the scientific channel e-penser (think of it as Vsauce or Veritasium in French). His April Fools videos are always the most meta possible and always throws everyone off the window, with months of preparation behind each one.
The first one was a fake scientific video: a theory that was in fact based on a lot of bullshit, but presented as your usual scientific video with proof and such.
For the second one, everyone expected a prank. So he made a jam packed video with only true stories, except it was cleverly crafted to drive your attention elsewhere and ended in the big reveal that you were fooled this whole time and he was still 100% honest with you throughout the whole thing.
    April 1

The third one threw everyone out of the water as it was a 360° video with multiple clones of him singing, and doing things together (ie him putting something on a table and other him picking it up).
And then the fourth one just came out. He made an ARG.

It was basically a game with each videos leading to two more unlisted videos and so on and so forth (there's more than an hour of footage). A lot of the videos were your usual Vsauce-like science videos, but he also had loads of bullshit ones like top 14 best wikipedia articles. The goal, from the get go, was to get to the "secret video". The trick is that actually, most of the videos were doubled or even tripled (multiple links lead to two exact copies of the same video which then had different links at the end), which ended in a very very specific path to follow. He used everything from annotations, end cards and description links. As you can guess, it only took a few minutes for the discord servers to show up. Moreover, there was 11 top lists, and each one had a very specific letter or number showing up at a moment for three frames. Adding them up would lead you to a youtube url, but no one could find them all nor find the correct order. It turned out that these letters were misleading. Every video was centered around one topic: conspiracy theories. His videos made you question what you watched and seek the hidden details because of their topic. The letters were actually your own conspiracy theory, because there was no need to care about them if you actually followed the rules.
