A Debate About Debates: Why "X is better than Y" Debates Should Stop

DoigtDoigt Member Posts: 1,124 ✭✭✭
In my opinion, the debate/fight/whatever which has opposed various fans of one thing against fans of other things has been done before and too many times. Whether it's Winrar vs 7zip, Star Wars vs Star Trek, Console vs PC, Firefox vs Chrome, Remake vs Original, etc, they're all the same debate and they're not constructive in any bit. All of those really boil down to personal preferences and circumstances; those cannot be the subject of a rational exchange of ideas. In that kind of topic, you will never convince your interlocutor, but you may try to persuade him, although perhaps in great vain as your opponent probably doesn't share your tastes nor your senses, but if he does, he doesn't share a great amount with you. Therefore, such a discussion always amount to pointless, although amusing, shows of fallacy-vomiting and more or less orthodox insults. I even recall that someone once said, to justify that Star Wars is better than Star Trek, "Star Trek is communist propaganda". Of course that example is circumstantial, but considering that there is an abysmally large quantity of similar occurrences in time and that those are in every space and place, we can form a strong induction that it's always or most always as such that the example given above is typical.

This is not in reaction to anything that may have happened on the forum, I am merely inviting people to discuss of this issue which plagues both the virtual and real life.

But should we discuss whether we should discuss what we should discuss? After all, opinions are formed from at least one of these two things:
Fanaticism (where we get most if not all of our glorious fanboys) and facts (which is how all of it begins. Opinions are, deep down, based on facts, even if they're wrong)

And if we do walk down that road, then what kind of discussion is better? Not everyone is capable of politely talking about what they consider superior, but having them not speak at all can't seriously be the better option.
And "no such thing as bad publicity" plays an important role here. If product A is so awful compared to product B that someone had to go out of their way and tell everybody so, surely it deserves a bit of your attention.
No, not that person. I mean, most of the time, but I'm talking about the product itself.

Aggressive, mindless debates might not make any difference to the offending parties in the end. Sure, it gets old.
But as long as it's legal and nobody is bleeding for it, does it matter what people do with their free time?

As a matter of fact, yes, it is. Regardless of it being harmful to your health (as a person, because dogs do it all the time), if you prefer secondhand meat to... Undigested ones, you do you.

Debates are one of the most important kinds of discussions, and hey, this is a discussion form
Maybe we should stop Wars over stuff, but I don’t see what’s wrong with a civilized debate.

I think as long as everyone keeps everything civilized, then who cares what they're arguing about? I don't think there's anything wrong with debating whether Star Wars is better than Star Trek, though people often take those arguments too far for some reason.
