Incognito mode exists for a reason, but I can assume why you wouldn't want to use it instead.

I use both. All incognito mode does is not save anything. It doesn't affect what google do.

In this order: Ecosia (supposedly eco-friendly and most times good enough), DuckDuckGo and as a last resort Google. And sometimes I bypass search engines and go directly to wikipedia.^^
And if I do a reverse image search I first try Tineye (sadly slow, but often good enough or even better) then Google (and sometimes Karmadecay).

If I want to search for very private things, I use a more private browser, and I use DuckDuckGo.

I think it's always nice to have an alternative and see what people can come up with.

I'm pretty sure Bing exists purely out of Microsoft's boredom, Yahoo and Ask you're right about, and DuckDuckGo exists because people fear the evil corporations.

Though in all seriousness, monopolies are bad for economies.
Monopolies are caused by companies having little to no competition in a business (such as search engines), so they can in theory reduce the quality of their brand/software/whatever without having to worry about the competition overtaking them. Without alternatives to Google, Google could find ways to increase their profits or decrease the costs of running the search engine to the expense of the users. Plus,
competition leads to higher quality products regardless. Google wouldn't be as useful as it is now if it never had competition.

Plot Twist: DuckDuckGo belongs to google and is used to trick the smarter people who run away from google.

We KNOW governments spy on their citizens. We KNOW Google keeps records of users' search history. There's no paranoia in seeing the obvious link. You can turn search history off on your account, but the searches and the IP addresses they were made from are still logged.

Stuff like this happens occasionally, even if you're not searching illegal stuff.

Why did I just search pressure cookers and backpacks because of that?

No, I was referring more to the "unmask dissidents" part. It's unfortunate that that happened, but it appears that nobody was harmed and that the searches were generally just cautionary. The way Erdbeere described it (at least to me) implies that he thinks government(s) would use that as a way to arrest those that seem to disagree with the government. While that might be true in some countries (I don't know what country Erdbeere is referring to, as I don't know where he lives), in America and similar countries, very few people are at risk of being searched by the police, and even then the searches described in the article you posted seemed generally superficial, simply looking for any red flags. Furthermore, that happened only a few months after the Boston bombings, so the police were obviously a bit more paranoid than usual.

tl;dr I realize that the government looks at our google searches, I mainly just disagree with the "unmask dissidents" part.

I was obviously (or apparently not) referring to countries that detain people who openly disagree with them.

Is it bad that this is the first time I have ever heard of DuckDuckGo?

    Also, TOR is missing.

There are no real search engine on the onion relay network. They're usually just normal websites with hundreds of links in their database. My favourite so far is "Not Evil", which has been around for a long time and has been of great help. http://hss3uro2hsxfogfq.onion/
